STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) are infections that are transferred between two individuals during sexual intercourse. They can spread through the individual’s vaginal fluids, semen, saliva or blood during vaginal, oral and anal sex.
Common STDs in Singapore include:
Some STDs cannot be cured and can only be managed with medication, while others can recover from their STDs fully if treatment is done as soon as the disease is detected.
Some common signs of STDs are:
Pain while urinating.
Swelling of lymph nodes, especially at the groin are.
Unusual vaginal or penile discharge.
Lumps and/or bumps at genital area.
Individuals who are sexually active are advised to undergo an STD testing every year or so, especially if you have multiple sexual partners. After STD testing in Singapore, you will receive your results after a few days depending on the type of STD. If you are found to be positive for an STD, you must seek treatment immediately.
Antibiotics are a common way of treating STDs in Singapore such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and other bacteria and/or virus-causing sexually transmitted diseases. If you have been diagnosed with more than one STD, a simple course of antibiotics will be able to treat both infections at the same time.
ARV drugs (antiretroviral) are a type of medication that are administered to patients suffering from STDs such as genital herpes or HIV. They are suppressive drugs that prevent your condition from worsening (reduced viral load) or from spreading it to your sexual partners. ARV drugs do not cure the patient of genital herpes or HIV but are able to manage your condition for many years after diagnosis.
Once you are diagnosed with an STD, your doctor will formulate a treatment plan for you as well as discuss your sexual health and history. Be sure to inform your sexual partners of your diagnosis so that they can also get tested for an STD.
You should also take precautions to prevent further spread of STDs such as using a condom during sexual intercourse. In some cases, you must abstain from sex for at least 7 days while undergoing STD treatment to prevent reinfection.
